Courtallam

Courtallam, the 'Spa of the south', is a panchayat town situated at an elevation of about 167 m on the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, India. Numerous rivers such as the Chittar River, the Manimuthar River, the Pachaiyar River and the Tambaraparani River originate here. It is famous for its waterfalls and has a number of health resorts.

Kadayanallur, 6 km from Tenkasi, 160 km from Madurai, 137 km from Kanniyakumari and 112 km from Thiruvananthapuram. The nearest airport to Coutrallam is Tuticorin Airport (TCR) approximately 86 kms. The nearest railway station to courtallam is Tenkasi which is just 5 km from here. Either private auto, bus or share van can be taken from Tenkasi to reach Courtallam.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Courtalam had a population of 2368. Males constitute 41% of the population and females 59%. Courtalam has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78% and, female literacy is 74%. In Courtalam, 7% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Seasons
June 15th to August 15th will be the Peak Season at Courtallam.
The Season starts from June, and lasts till September, and the water falls will be crowded in these times.
November to January is usually the "off season" for the area due to Winter.

How to go to Coutrallam
One can reach Coutrallam from Madurai & Thirunalveli etc.
From Bangalore: You can catch Train No:6732 (Mysore Tuticorin Express), and you can get down in Madurai, then can take a local train from Madurai to Tenkasi (Tenkasi is 5 km away from Coutrallam). If not, then catch two Ultra Delux buses were run by TN gov to Shenkottai( 3 KM away from Courtallam )or KPN Travels.
From Chennai: You can catch the Podigai Express which comes from Chennai to Tenkasi (Tenkasi is 5 km away from Coutrallam).
People can also take the bus from Madurai to Coutrallam (This will take 5 hours). Train Journey will take 3.5 Hours (160 Kms).

Medicinal herbs
This is not only a tourist spot but also a health resort. Courtallam water has medicinal properties since the water runs through forests of herbs and the water has therapeutic qualities to cure physical ailments. During the season (period June to September in every year) thousands of tourists from near and far visit this place. The waters of the falls are believed to have medicinal properties as they run through
forests of herbs before their descent. Tourists who visit and bathe in the waters claim that the water has a soothing effect, help the old feel young and the sick heal rapidly.

The Nine Falls

1) Peraruvi (Main Falls) - It is very reachable and it is right inside Courtallam Town. It is near Kutralanathar Temple. It is supposed to be the biggest waterfall among the others and also is one of the falls that is visited in the off-season(Nov.-Jan.).
2.Chitraruvi, (Small Falls) - It is just above the Main Falls. There are steps to reach Chitraruvi falls. Here, boys and girls have a separate covered area for taking bath in the falls. A ticket is required.
3) Shenbagadevi Falls, - (The place is filled with Senbhaga Trees) - This requires trekking a while, as it is about one hour to reach the falls. It is one mile from the Main Falls. On the way the Main falls are viewable.
4) Thenaruvi (Honey Falls) - The area is known for the honey - This is above Shenbaga Aruvi and is supposed to be the origin. People cannot take a bath in the falls. There are many beehives here.
5) Aintharuvi (Five Falls) - You need to take a van or bus to reach the falls. It is quite far from the Main Falls if you walk (3 miles). The waterfall is divided into five sections. There is the Swami Ayyappa Temple and Vinayaka Temple near the waterfalls.
Temple
There is a Hindu temple in Courtallam dedicated to Lord (Siva). This temple has inscriptions regarding Chola and Pandya Kings.[3] Nearby, there is a small temple called Chitra Sabha, decorated with rural deities. The sabha out of 5 sabhas where Lord Nataraja performed the cosmic dance.[4] The waterfalls are viewable from the temple. Sage Agastyar, Arjunan had visited the Shrine. It is believed that Sage Agastyar got the vision to see the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's held at Mount Himalay. Many people get married here honouring the occasion. Lot of small Sannidhi's are present inside the temple which includes Lord Vishnu, Kasi Viswanathar Kasi Visalakshi, Tenkasi ViswanatharSwamy and Ulagammai Ambikai, Madurai Meenakshi and SundareshwararSwamy, Nellaiyappar GandhimathiAmbal and Navagrahas.
